We are fortunate if some of the memories of our earliest days in school survive throughout our lifetime. In my case some are vivid and some are blurred in the mists of time. Now the childlike desires, tastes and smells are gone, but the tenderness remains. This poem builds a bridge to the present and to my woman, my wife, my precious valentine.
My Precious Valentine
Paper hearts, sugar tarts, and chocolate candy that doesn’t taste the same any more
I love you, violets are blue, some old scissors that doesn’t cut anymore
Of all these things and a bell that rings I have fond recollection
I sit and ponder and often wonder at my memory collection
That’s in the past and here at last in the twilight of time
I live in the now so happy that somehow I have my precious valentine
