When I Was A Child

When I was a child I learned about blue tailed lizards
that ran through wild flowers and slipped out of sight.
I didn’t like to eat fried chicken gizzards
but I loved tomatoes my Grandma canned just right.

I was afraid of spiders and copperhead snakes
I played with worms and bugs and tadpoles in the lake
Later I learned to hunt ‘possum on a dark night
You couldn’t find them when the moon was bright
