I have often wondered about the movie advertisements that contain such statements as “30 years in the making”. Cecil B. Demil must have been rather old by the time he finnished five or six of those. But then perhaps he might have placed several film cans on the shelf and turned them over to the editing department years later. I’m sure that wasn’t the way that came about, however that is similar to some of the things that goes on with us.
In 1988 Linda made for me an absoloutely beautiful chess set and board in ceramics. We oohed and aaahed over it for a period of time as we do with most good things that come our way. then carefully wrapped it in bubble wrap and stored it in tote boxes, one for the set and one for the board, for fear it might get broken.
Several days ago Linda got it out of it’s resting pace in the garage. We discussed doing something with it that we could enjoy. A day or so later while driving to Brandon we stopped at a pile beside the road that makes up a one owner flea market. There sat a table with a terrible looking top on a good looking well built frame. After it found it’s way into our trunk Linda spotted two straight chairs that looked good but had ugly upholstery on bottoms. After sitting them together to see how they fit it’s needless to say they came home with us. In fact we interupted our trip to Brandon to bring them home.
Linda took each chess piece and filled it with sand then sealed it with hot wax from glue gun, She super glued felt to the bottom of each piece.
After we returned from Brandon Linda went to Wal~Mart and got a good choice of material to replace the chair bottoms. She called J. P. (Uncle Johnny) and asked him over to show him. He had said years ago that he would like to make a table for that set. In a day or so he came over and got the table to take to his shop. Mean time Linda had the chairs re-upholsterd.
J.P. removed the top from the table and stripped and refinnshed the frame. He built a larger top out of beautiful maple and put a walnut molding around the edges, which he fashioned himself, the top of which reaches a fraction of an inch above the table top. all has beutiful finnish. He then glued the board to the table top.
It now sets in open space in the living room that is occupied by tree during Christmas season.
Oh I really like that chess table!! I want to get one for Eric so that he can put his revolutionary war set on it.. I love the way that turned out.
It really is the new centerpiece of the living room. Its nice. So let me see….. Dad has a chess set…. Raymond has a chess set…. and I have a deck of skip-bo cards. hmmmm. I think I know where my inferiority complex comes from.
